Here we are on the Cassowary Coast. It is 8pm and I am sitting outside writing this blog. It is an easy 26C - very pleasant although I need some Aeroguard to keep the mossies away! Kurrimine Beach is a small, friendly community about 20km off the highway. We have a beautiful site for the caravan right on the beachfront. As you can see below, the beach is very crowded!!! The only person I saw on there was a local with his dog - he came and chatted for a while.

This coast is the home of various animals including the cassowary after which it is named and also the crocodile. One has to be aware of where you wander as mangroves, creeks etc could easily be the home of a salt-water croc. A local told us about a 5m croc who used to sun himself beside the boat ramp in the village but he was relocated last year because he was making the locals nervous!
Earlier this year we stayed at Balgal Beach just north of Townsville. There is a cafe/shop called Fishermans Landing beside the creek which is about 25m wide. On the other side of the creek is a new caravan park at a place called Rollingstone. Fishermans Landing is the only cafe in the area but the people from Rollingstone choose to make the 15km round trip via the Bruce Highway rather than cross the creek because it is home to a croc called Snappy Tom and his mate. Terry asked the owner of the cafe if there had ever been anyone taken by the crocodile - his reply was..... It is not good for business to discuss this but put it this way....... any abandoned caravans are towed to Townsville to be sold!
We drove over to Mission Beach this afternoon, calling into Bingil Bay on the way. In 1970's Bingil Bay was the scene of a confrontation between the then Country Party State Government and a large number of hippies who had made a camp site at Bingil Bay and who refused to move out. After some time of confrontation, the police were brought in to move them on.
